The Poynting Narwhal series consists of high-gain, omnidirectional 4G/5G MIMO marine antennas designed for vessels and coastal sites. Covering 617–4200 MHz, the series delivers long-range connectivity in harsh conditions with its IP68 fibreglass radome and sea-proof construction.
The narwhal is a whale of Arctic waters, known for its long, spiralled tusk. The tusk is thought to work as a sensory organ that detects changes in the surrounding environment.
Poynting gave this name to its long, slim-radome OMNI-900 family as a nod to the antenna's role at sea: a structure that "senses" signals from afar across a wide frequency range and withstands rough weather and salt water. The Poynting Narwhal series consists of three models sharing the same body design.
All three models cover the same frequency range; they differ in the number of elements and how gain is distributed.
4×4 MIMO
Two low-gain 3 dBi and two high-gain 8 dBi elements. Covers both near-shore and offshore cruising.
4×4 MIMO
Four high-gain 8 dBi elements, vertically separated in a single radome. For maximum range.
| Feature | OMNI-0902 | OMNI-0904 | OMNI-0914 |
|---|---|---|---|
| MIMO / ports | 2×2, 2 ports | 4×4, 4 ports | 4×4, 4 ports |
| Elements | 2 × 8 dBi | 2 × 3 dBi + 2 × 8 dBi | 4 × 8 dBi |
| Frequency | 617–4200 MHz | 617–4200 MHz | 617–4200 MHz |
| Connector | N (female) | N (female) | N (female) |
| Package length | 1710 mm | 1710 mm | 2550 mm |
Why does the OMNI-0904 use two different gains? High gain is achieved by narrowing the beam in the vertical plane. An 8 dBi element reaches far towards the horizon, but its narrow beam is affected by the vessel's rolling and by being very close to a high base station on shore. A 3 dBi element covers a wider vertical angle. Combining both in one antenna gives a balanced connection offshore and in harbour.
In Narwhal antennas the MIMO elements are stacked inside a single radome. This vertical separation is the most effective diversity method at sea.
Offshore, reflections mostly come from the sea surface, that is, from below. Elements at different heights receive these reflections in different phases, so when one fades the other keeps receiving a strong signal (diversity), and the MIMO layers stay separated.
Omnidirectional antennas radiate very little straight up or down, so stacked elements are naturally well isolated from each other. A four-element MIMO antenna therefore takes up only a single mounting point on the mast.

Narwhal antennas are fixed to a mast or rail with a marine mount. The optional BRKT-90 bracket is made of 316 stainless steel and is suited to saltwater environments.

Order codes: A-OMNI-0902/0904/0914-V1-01 (with 2 m cable), -V1-02 (no cable). Manufacturer: Poynting OMNI-904
Both are 4×4 MIMO. All four elements of the OMNI-0914 are 8 dBi, giving the longest range. The OMNI-0904 combines two high-gain elements with two wide-angle elements; it gives more balanced results near the coast and on smaller vessels that roll more.
Yes. The 617–4200 MHz range covers the 700 MHz (n28) and 3.5 GHz (n78) 5G bands and all 4G bands.
The V1-02 version comes without cable, so a low-loss cable of the required length can be used. The N-type connector allows thick, low-loss cables on long cable runs.
A single Narwhal antenna separates its MIMO elements internally. If there are other antennas on the vessel, the spacings on the marine antenna installation page apply.
