How is 5G connectivity provided? The datasheet does not list an internal cellular modem for the Orbit models. 5G access is added through an external 5G router or FWA device; in marine projects, this role can be taken by the Peplink MAX BR1 Pro 5G or the dual-modem MAX BR2 Pro (Peplink marine solutions). Satellite access also requires the relevant operator's terminal and service.
SPEEDFUSION TECHNOLOGIES

Make your links work together.

Link management that answers different needs: link outages, variable satellite performance and real-time traffic.

Bonding eight Starlink satellite terminals with SpeedFusion on Peplink MAX Orbit 8
MAX Orbit 8: satellite terminals connected to eight 2.5G PoE+ WAN ports are combined into a single SpeedFusion connection

Bandwidth Bonding

Combines the capacity of multiple WAN links inside a SpeedFusion tunnel. The resulting speed depends on link quality, the remote endpoint and the device's VPN capacity.

Hot Failover

When a WAN link drops, traffic continues over other suitable links, improving continuity for critical sessions.

WAN Smoothing

Helps reduce the effect of packet loss on real-time voice and video traffic. Redundant packet transmission can use additional bandwidth.

SpeedFusion Boost

Aims to reduce the impact of unstable satellite links on the overall performance of the bonded network, for efficient use during satellite handovers and changing access conditions.

AT SEA, IN THE FIELD, ON SITE

Connectivity wherever the operation is

Marine and maritime

Use multiple satellite terminals on a common network on board. Add external 5G access within coastal coverage to increase connectivity options for operational traffic and crew internet.

Energy and mining sites

Combine satellite and cellular links at sites with limited terrestrial access. Build a redundant infrastructure for remote monitoring, site data and technical team access.

Critical link redundancy

Design alternative access to fibre for data centres, warehouses, service providers and cell site infrastructure. Expand backup options with multiple terminals and networks.

Mobile teams and temporary deployments

GPS support, rugged hardware and a design the manufacturer specifies as vibration-resistant make it suitable for mobile command vehicles and relocating field operations. All models are rated for −40 to +65 °C operation.

Poynting antennas on the 5G side

In marine projects using an external 5G router, choosing the right Poynting antenna is part of the cellular link design. The antenna is selected according to the router's frequency, MIMO and connector configuration and connects to the cellular router.

¹ Orbit 2 and 4 support 5 VPN peers with PrimeCare; 10 or 20 peers with the PVN-LC-10 / PVN-LC-20 add-on licences. Orbit 8 requires PrimeCare for 30 peers; the datasheet states a free first-year subscription for this model.

² Enabling PoE output on the Orbit 8 requires a 50–54 V DC input. The terminal's power requirement and PoE compatibility must be checked separately.

Speeds are the manufacturer's device performance figures, not an internet speed guarantee. Actual performance varies with links, traffic, configuration and remote endpoint conditions. Specifications are subject to change by the manufacturer.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common questions about Peplink MAX Orbit

Is MAX Orbit a satellite terminal?

MAX Orbit is a network device to which external satellite terminals and other WAN links are connected. Satellite communication requires a compatible terminal and service subscription from Starlink, OneWeb or the relevant service provider.

Do MAX Orbit models have an internal 5G modem?

This datasheet does not specify an internal 5G modem or SIM slot. 5G access is provided through an external cellular router / FWA device and added to the Orbit over a suitable WAN connection.

Do the speeds of multiple satellite links simply add up?

SpeedFusion Bandwidth Bonding can combine multiple links through a suitable remote endpoint or service. Because of link latency, packet loss, protocol overhead, the remote endpoint and the model's VPN capacity, the usable total speed may not equal the arithmetic sum of individual link speeds.

Is the Orbit 8's 4 Gbps figure its encrypted VPN speed?

4 Gbps is the Orbit 8's routing throughput. The datasheet specifies SpeedFusion VPN performance as 1 Gbps for both unencrypted and AES-256 encrypted use. The AES-256 VPN figure for Orbit 2 and 4 is 200 Mbps.

Can the Orbit 8 power all satellite terminals over PoE?

The Orbit 8 offers 802.3at PoE+ outputs and a total PoE power budget of 240 W. Each terminal's power requirement and power standard may differ; direct PoE powering should not be assumed without verifying compatibility. PoE output requires a DC input of 50–54 V.

Does the PrimeCare choice vary by model?

The datasheet lists PrimeCare B / PrimeCare+ B for Orbit 2, D for Orbit 4 and E for Orbit 8. Packages are offered with 1, 2 or 4-year terms. VPN peer count and required services should be evaluated together with model and licence choice.

Where does the Poynting antenna connect in a marine project?

The Poynting antenna chosen for the cellular link connects to an external 4G/5G router with suitable antenna ports. The router's data connection is carried to the Orbit. The Wi-Fi and GPS ports on the Orbit are not used in place of a cellular antenna connection.
