GNSS AT SEA

Why Does a Marine GNSS Antenna Matter?

Accurate, uninterrupted position data is critical at sea for ship navigation, collision avoidance, hydrographic survey, port operations, offshore positioning, autonomous surface vessels and search and rescue. A professional marine GNSS antenna keeps satellite reception reliable in harsh sea conditions and enables high-precision positioning.

Harxon GNSS antennas support GPS, BeiDou, Galileo, GLONASS, IRNSS and QZSS with a multi-band design. Models that support L-Band correction signals and RTK can be used, together with a suitable GNSS receiver, in applications that need centimetre-level positioning.

For the physics behind phase centre stability, see our GNSS antenna phase centre guide; for the full connectivity picture on board, see boat internet.

KEY FEATURES

What Harxon Brings to Marine Positioning

Stable Phase Centre

Multi-point feeding keeps phase centre variation (PCV) low; the rugged series specifies ≤2 mm PCV repeatability, with wide-angle circular polarisation (WACP).

Low-Elevation Tracking

High gain and wide beamwidth with symmetric radiation patterns help track low satellites, even with superstructure or masts partly blocking the sky.

Interference Rejection

A pre-filtered LNA suppresses strong out-of-band signals, an advantage on vessels carrying radar, VHF, cellular and satellite equipment.

Built for the Sea

IP67/IP69K housings, 96 h salt fog testing and shock and vibration ratings on the rugged series; metal-base option for heavy-duty mounts.

TIMING ANTENNAS

GNSS Timing Antennas

Harxon timing antennas pair a highly circular wideband patch with a low-noise amplifier for strong multipath and out-of-band rejection. Their conical radome sheds ice and snow and deters birds, making them suitable for permanent installations such as smart buoys, port infrastructure and on-board time synchronisation.

COMPACT HELIX ANTENNAS

D-Helix™ Antennas for Small Platforms

Harxon's patented D-QHA helix antennas are small and light, with stable wide-angle circular polarisation and low phase centre deviation. They suit small USVs, drones launched from vessels and portable survey terminals where weight and size matter more than a large ground plane.

FAQ

Marine GNSS Antenna: Frequently Asked Questions

Which Harxon model is best for permanent installation on a ship's mast?

The rugged HX-CVX606A and HX-CVX600A are designed for this: full-band GNSS with L-Band, IP67/IP69K housings, 96 h salt fog testing and 5/8"-11 pole or 4 × M8 screw mounting. The CVX606A adds a solid metal base for high shock and vibration.

Do I need L-Band support?

L-Band carries satellite-delivered correction services (PPP). Offshore, beyond the reach of RTK base stations or mobile networks, an L-Band capable antenna and receiver can keep high-accuracy positioning available.

What does IP69K add over IP67?

IP67 covers temporary immersion in water. IP69K covers high-pressure, high-temperature water jets, which is relevant for deck washing and heavy spray.

When should I choose a timing antenna?

When the GNSS receiver's main job is time synchronisation rather than precise positioning, for example in smart buoys, port infrastructure or on-board network timing. HX-TR201A and HX-CT3602A are designed for this, with conical radomes for permanent installation.

Are helix antennas suitable for boats?

The IP67 helix models (CH7609A, CHX600A, CH6601A) are suited to small USVs, vessel-launched drones and portable systems where low weight matters. For permanent deck mounting on larger vessels, the rugged CVX series is the better choice. The CHX602A is IP65 and intended for handheld survey terminals.
