What Is the Poynting OMNI-0496?

The Poynting OMNI-0496 is a single-port (SISO), high-gain marine antenna developed for Wi-Fi connectivity at sea and on the coast. It works both with older 2.4 GHz devices and with Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 networks using the 5 and 6 GHz bands.

The antenna provides 7 dBi gain at 2.4 GHz and 10 dBi at 5 GHz. The high gain concentrates radiation in the horizontal plane, allowing connection to the marina access point or the shore network from a greater distance. The antenna also covers 3.3–4.2 GHz with up to 8 dBi gain; this range includes the 3.5 GHz (n78) 5G band.

  • Dual-band Wi-Fi: 2400–2500 MHz and 4900–7200 MHz
  • IEEE 802.11 b/g/n/ac/ax/be compatible
  • 7 dBi at 2.4 GHz, 10 dBi at 5 GHz; 360° omnidirectional coverage
  • IP68 marine-grade housing: salt-spray and UV protected, flame retardant
  • 1-inch marine standard mount; optional 316 stainless steel brackets
  • N-type (female) connector; cable selected as required

Wi-Fi in the marina: The router on board can connect to the marina or harbor Wi-Fi network through an external antenna and distribute that connection inside the boat. Compared with router antennas inside the hull, a high-gain antenna mounted high up outside significantly increases link distance and speed.

Poynting OMNI-0496 Applications

Coaxial cable loss is high at 5 and 6 GHz. Keep the cable as short as possible or place the access point close to the antenna.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Poynting OMNI-0496

Can the OMNI-0496 be used with a 4G/5G router?

No, this antenna is designed for Wi-Fi. Although it covers 3.3–4.2 GHz, it does not cover 4G or the low 5G bands. For cellular connectivity at sea, the OMNI-0493 or the 2×2 MIMO OMNI-0402 is suitable.

What is needed for Wi-Fi MIMO?

The OMNI-0496 has a single port. Access points using 2×2 or 4×4 MIMO need more than one antenna; for a multi-port solution in a single housing, we recommend the Poynting OMNI-498 (2×2) and OMNI-494 (4×4).

Should I use 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz?

2.4 GHz propagates better over long distances and around obstacles. At short range and in crowded marinas, 5 and 6 GHz offer higher speeds and less interference. The OMNI-0496 covers both bands with a single antenna.

How does it connect to the access point?

The antenna comes with an N-type (female) connector. The device side is usually RP-SMA or N-type; use a matching, low-loss cable that is as short as possible.

Where should I mount the antenna on the boat?

Mount it as high as possible on the superstructure, outside the radar beam and away from VHF antennas. Keeping it away from metal masts and surfaces preserves the radiation pattern.
