Vehicle Antenna Selection: What to Consider

The right antenna is what lets your router use its full modem capacity in the field.

Multi-port antenna Example: MIMO-4-17 V2 (7-in-1) 4G/5G Router 4 cellular · 2 Wi-Fi · 1 GNSS Cellular (C) Wi-Fi (W) GNSS (G)

Port count = router connectors

The first rule of antenna selection: the antenna's cables should match the router's connectors one to one.

  • For a 4×4 MIMO router, choose an antenna with 4 cellular ports; with a 2-port antenna half of the modem stays idle.
  • An 8-port 5G router is not 8×8 MIMO on one modem; it usually means 2 × 4×4 modems. Use MIMO-8 or two 4-port antennas.
  • Extra ports are not a problem; unused cables can be capped with a 50 Ω terminator.

Cable loss

Keep vehicle antenna cables short. Long coaxial runs eat a large part of the gain at 3.5 GHz. SWIRL CPE, which houses the router with the antenna, minimises this loss.

Durability and certification

Vibration, vehicle washing and UV resistance matter in transport. An IP69K housing and E-Mark certification ensure years of reliable operation on the roof.

Mounting and position

The antenna performs best in the centre of a metal roof with a clear view. Use magnetic mounts where drilling is not possible, and in-window PANL antennas for rental vehicles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Count the SMA/RP-SMA connectors on the router's rear panel and check the labels in the user manual. Cellular ports are usually marked "LTE/5G" or "MAIN/AUX", Wi-Fi ports "WLAN" and the location port "GPS/GNSS".
If the router supports 4×4 MIMO, a four-port cellular antenna delivers higher download speeds under the same signal conditions and a more stable connection on the move. If the router is only 2×2, the extra cables of a 4-port antenna stay unused.
Two antennas used together when no single housing offers the required number of ports. For example, an 8-port router can use two MIMO-4-4 V2 antennas, or MIMO-4-19 V2 + MIMO-4-4 V2. The MIMO-8 series covers this need in a single housing.
Yes. The PUCK, MIMO-4, MIMO-8 and SWIRL series offer magnetic mounting. For rental or fleet vehicles, the in-window PANL-401 and PANL-631 are also practical options.
SWIRL-4-CPE and SWIRL-8-CPE house the 5G router directly under the antenna in the aluminium SWIRL-BASE. Short RF cables minimise loss, and only power and Ethernet run into the vehicle.
